DOORSTEP
I laid there shivering in the cold grass.
So surprised I wasn’t dead.
Squinting my eyes in the new dawn with gray lightning in my head.
Counted up all of my fingers and saw somehow I still had ten.
The devil nearly dragged me to his doorstep once again.

A crowded bar. Somewhere behind me,
thought I heard a wise remark.
My fist flew out. I broke a beer glass. And then the world went dark.
Woke up with blood on my phone screen, I wrote you but hadn’t hit SEND.
The devil (devil) nearly dragged me (dragged me right down)
to his doorstep once again.

Yeah, he grabbed me and slapped me and mocked me. (he mocked me)
I slipped through his fingers, now I’m living like a rat. (like a rat)
I was weakened, still he never caught me. (never caught me)
I wonder who I thank for that?
Yes, I do…

I went out cold into the pitch black.
Then I felt a warm embrace.
I saw shadows all around me, though I couldn’t see one face.
The party looked so inviting, but I knew I couldn’t attend.
The devil (devil) nearly dragged me (dragged me right down)
to his doorstep once again.
