PAINT YOUR HOUSE BLUE

The woman in the red house lives alone.

Swallowing bitter pills. Chewing dry bones.

I’m shaking as I stand here. But I come here too often.

Got to watch them pass the baby over Sonny Green’s coffin.

Did you miss me, baby?

Because I’m coming back for you.

Put the mouth on me, baby.

If you think it’s that’s true, go on and paint your house blue.

Staring through the gate. Staring at the barbed wire.

Drown him in the water. Baptize him in fire.

Headstones broken like white snail shells

in front of where they’re building that new hotel.

Did you miss me, baby?

Because I’m coming back for you.

Put the mouth on me, baby.

If you think it’s that’s true, you can paint your house blue.

Hustle through the marsh. Slushing through the bog.

Trying to find my way back home through the fog.

I feel any second I might disappear and come back rested in a thousand years.

Standing at the spit while they turn that pig.

On my way to church when the burden’s too big.

Put a bullet through my smile, pull me down from a tree.

You can push me from the circle but I’ll still believe.

Did you miss me, baby?

Because I’m coming back for you.

Put the mouth on me, baby.

If you think it’s that’s true...

Hustle through the marsh. Slushing through the bog.

Trying to find my way back home through the fog.

I feel any second I might disappear and come back rested in a thousand years.
