Shadow cast on a bedroom door.

Blood runs cold. Feet touch the floor.

Open window. Jump to the grass.

Out in the dark, waiting for it all to pass.

 

Running fast to the field of dirt.

Hiding out where no one gets hurt.

Electric towers stand guard above.

Closing eyes. And dream of love.

TV’s on. The bottle’s half-full.

Whiskered lips take another hard pull.

Keeping small. Trying not to be seen.

The house is quiet. The flames are out.

Heart beat slows. And the breath returns.
